How we estimate macros
Last updated 16 June 2026
Every dish in MenuMacros carries a badge telling you where its figures come from. We'd rather be honest about that than pretend every number is exact, so here's how it works.
Verified
Verified macrosA Verified dish is taken straight from the restaurant's own published nutrition information. We link to that source on the dish so you can check the original figures yourself. These are as accurate as the restaurant's own data.
Estimated
Estimated macrosNot every restaurant publishes full nutrition figures for every item. When a dish isn't fully covered, we mark it Estimated and work out a considered figure from the most reliable data available, rather than leaving it out. To build an estimate we draw on:
- Partial official data. Any figures the restaurant does publish - calories, a single macro, allergen sheets, or per-ingredient values - anchor the estimate.
- Comparable dishes. The same or near-identical item at similar chains, and other dishes on the same menu that share ingredients and portion sizes.
- Standard ingredient and portion data. Established nutrition values for the underlying ingredients at a sensible serving size.
Each estimate carries an internal confidence level, and we lean toward cautious, representative figures rather than best-case ones.
A note on accuracy
All figures - verified or estimated - are a guide. Recipes, portions, and suppliers change, and the same dish can vary from branch to branch and day to day. If you need exact numbers, check directly with the restaurant.
